In Science, Year 3 have been looking at rocks. We looked at a range of rocks to identify the characteristics of Metamorphic, Igneous and Sedimentary rocks. We sorted them into groups and identifies similarities and differences between them.

We reflected on Remembrance day in year 3 by making poppies to plant in our remembrance garden. On Friday we had our service and reflected on past and present conflict.

In preparation for Remembrance Day over the weekend, we have been busy doing an art activitiy to make poppy art. We have spoken about why we celebrate Remembrance Day and practise a new medium using clay in art. Year 3 created the background of our clay art using charcoal. We have also been looking at some famous Remembrance poems and some children have used their best handwriting to rewrite them.
Year 3- What makes a role model?

In R.E we have been looking what makes a good role model. We thought about who our role models are at school, home, clubs or in the wider world. After this, we discussed what qualities or characteristics role models demonstrate.
Year 3- Take a look at our pillows!

We finally finished our pillows! We took time and care in firstly creating the degin on out pillows and attaching decorations. We then had to stuff and sew the pillows. Once we finished we evialuated them based on their appearence, joining techniques and their purpose.
Year 3 Welcome their parents to The Royal Ballet

This week was our last week dancing with The Royal Ballet School. To celebrate the success we have had over the last 6 weeks, we invited parents in to watch what we have been learning. It was a great turn out and we appreciate the support from our friends and family! We showcased our spotting, skipping, sautes, reverence and finally a routine we had put together linking to our Science topic on Forces.

This week Year Three listened to the song ‘ Lets work it out together’ again and discussed creating a composition that goes along with it. We used YUMU and looked at note length and varying it throughout our pieces.

We have held our first Spelling Bee of the year and what a wonderful event it was! 4 children in each year group represented their house and were given three words to spell from over a list of 30 possible words. Every child showed courage and determination when it came to spelling their words. It was a very close contest, with Chepstow winning overall with 15 out of 15. We are very proud of all the children who represented their house and are looking forward to the next one.

On Tuesday Year 3 took part in ‘Take 10’. This was provided by the National Literacy Trust and Susie Dent talked about her latest book and her love for words! The children were then guided into taking 10 to read their books.

This morning the children participated in a whole school spelling bee. The children represented their houses and went head to head in front of the whole school. Well done to Elliott, Chelsea, Advait and Rehaanvir who were excellent going up for Year 3!

In this lesson Year 3 looked at completing a fair test experiment that we had planned the week before. We investigated how friction changed on different surfaces then we measured and recorded our results. We had to use the measuring skills that we had learnt in Maths to support in carrying out the test accurately.

In computing we have been doing programming and we have been learning how to use Scratch. This week we focused on creating an algorithm to make our sprite draw. We first of all explored an existing algorithm and identified how it worked. We then created our own and made our individual sprites draw.

This week we started our work on Black History Month. We focused on Ruby Bridges and the struggles she faced in life. We spent the afternoon creating work based on her. Keep a look out for the diary entries we will be writing based on the experiences of Ruby Bridges.

Last week the children went to the Globe Theatre in Blackpool to watch a Royal Ballet demonstration. The children enjoyed watching the older students dance and were impressed by the strength of the dancers!

In DT, we have been learning about the practical skill of sewing. We thought about how to thread a needle and thread. In the lesson we mastered running stitch and back stitch.

In PE, we have been visited by the Royal Ballet school. We learnt how to do a reverence and how to move around the space. The children enjoyed listening to the live music and performing in front of others.

In Science, Year 3 have looked at investigating forces and looking at friction in action. The children did a range of activities to see how friction worked and what happened when they rubbed their hands together.

In Computing, Year 3 have been looking at using the program ‘Scratch’. We looked at how the blocks moved the sprite and when we looked inside the program we throught about how we could improve it.
Year 3- Exploring explanation texts!

This week we have started our new Reading into Writing journey looking at explanation text. We identified and located features in a range of texts and thought about which we may use when writing our own.

Today we started our DT journey. This half term we will be designing, making and evaluating our own pillows. We started the journey by taking inspiration from others. We looked at a variety of pillows and evaluated them based on their purpose, fabric, design and decorations.

Over the last few weeks the children in Year 3 have been attending Little Big Book Club. We have watched an interview from authors, made our own books, created a recipe for a book and shared and discussed what we have enjoyed. The children and parents have thoroughly enjoyed this process and have learnt ways to talk about and appreciate books.

Last week we had our Heritage Day and learnt about our local area. In Year 3 we learnt about Fisherman’s Friend and how Doreen Lofthouse had a huge impact on ours and neighbouring towns. We learnt about the Lofthouse family, the history of the throat sweets and even tried some!
Year 3- Brilliant branching database!

In Computing we have started learning about branching databases. We have looked at catogorising questions into ‘yes’ and ‘no’ questions. The children uses software to explore and build their own branching databases.

In Maths we have been looking at Shapes. In this lesson we looked at making and drawing regular polygons. We thought about the sides and vertices when making these shapes.

This week we have started gymnastics in our P.E sessions, and looked at balances. We identified patches and point on our body that we can spin and balance on. The children created sequences looking at changing our heights and varying our spins.
