Year 6 - Computing: Spreadsheets

Date: 13th Sep 2023 @ 3:53pm

Today we began our new unit of spreadsheets in Computing. Today's session involved inputting data into a given table. We did this by rolling a dice 5 times and repeating the task. We then added each roll to the table.

Year 2 Representing Data

Date: 19th Jul 2023 @ 3:38pm

This half term, Year Two have been exploring different ways to represent data using an online system linking our Computing and Maths learning. Throughout the unit we have explored creating tally charts, pictograms and today we finished the unit by using data to create a block diagram. We have really enjoyed the unit and putting our Maths statistics knowledge into Computing.

Year 2 Persuasive Adverts

Date: 18th Jul 2023 @ 4:24pm

Today, we used the computers to create our hot write of a persuasive advert. We thought about making it appealing by using bright colours and exciting shapes as well as using persuasive language to persuased someone to visit either Antarctica, the rainforest or the desert. We used our Geography knowledge from hot and cold places to make sure we told some facts. We had to have lots of patience but enjoyed using the chromebooks for our writing.

Year 3- Brilliant branching database!

Date: 6th Jul 2023 @ 8:28am

In Computing we have started learning about branching databases. We have looked at catogorising questions into ‘yes’ and ‘no’ questions. The children uses software to explore and build their own branching databases.

Year 4 - Repeated codes

Date: 4th Jul 2023 @ 2:19pm

WOW! We cannot believe the perseverance from Year 4 today. They have shown all their learning from the last few weeks to explore repeated codes to make shapes and pictures. The children used forward (FD), pen up (PU), pen down (PD), RT (right turn), LT (left turn) and repeat (repeat code) on Turtle Academy to create their shapes and images. Year 4 were able to recognise angles in shapes to input the correct right or left turn.

Year 4 - Writing code

Date: 20th Jun 2023 @ 2:40pm

We have had lots of fun writing letters and small words this week. We learned two new codes (PU and PD), then meant that we could have the pen up and pen down, so that we could separate the letters.

Year 4 - Programming

Date: 13th Jun 2023 @ 8:08pm

We used a website called https://turtleacademy.com/playground to begin our programming journey. First, we learned what different codes mean. For example, FD 100 means move forward 100 steps and RT 90 means rotate 90 degrees to the right. Everyone had a really good go at playing around with it to start. Then we had a go at getting the turtle to move to make numbers. As a challenge, some of us had a go at getting to turtle to write out our initials.

Year 1 Grouping Data

Date: 13th Jun 2023 @ 5:26pm

Today we learnt about data and information. Firstly, we learnt that labelling, grouping and searching are important parts of data and information. Through different activites, we then learnt to describe objects using labels, match objects to groups, identify labels for groups and describe properties of objects.

Year 4 - Final Piece

Date: 22nd May 2023 @ 3:35pm

We created our final pieces today. We used all the skills we have learned this half term so far including cropping, rotating, cloning and combining. Our brief was to create a book cover for a story about a magical word.

Year 3 Stop Motion Animation

Date: 16th May 2023 @ 11:43am

In our topic of Stop Motion animation we created short films from still pictures. We used onion skinning techniques to know where our previous picture were so that our changes were small. We made sure not to include our own hair/fingers in the photos to ensure consistency in the finished clip. Some people even added sound (planes and trains) to our animations. We were inspired by our Science of Growth and the WW2 topic using steam trains and fighter planes to create our animations.

Year 1 Digital Art

Date: 15th May 2023 @ 6:18pm

Today we were very excited to be able to use the Chromebooks! We began by thinking about how we can paint using computers and we were introduced to 'Paintz.' We explored all of the different tools available and began to choose appopriate shapes and colours to create a digital picture in the style of an artist. We looked at art work created by Eric Carle and created a picture in this style.

Year 4 - Cloning and combining

Date: 11th May 2023 @ 2:18pm

The children really impressed us this week with their image editing skills. We used a website called pixlr.com to clone (copy and paste) parts of images to change their composition - whether that be add or remove something in the image. Then they had a go at combining images where they used part of another image to copy across to their original.

Year 6 - Computing

Date: 4th May 2023 @ 3:01pm

This week in Computing we completed lessons 2 and 3 of our variables in games unit. This involved adding sprites to the program and adding variables for each one so that when they were clicked their values either increased or decreased. We also improved a pre-made game and added a score variable to add up points.

Year 4 - Editing photos

Date: 4th May 2023 @ 9:10am

Our unit this half term is all about photo editing. This week, we had to use our rotating and cropping skills from last week, then newly learned colour changing skills to change photos to a given mood.

Year 2 Floor Robots

Date: 4th May 2023 @ 8:13am

This half term, in Computing, we are looking at algorithms and programming floor robots. Yesterday, we focused on making predictions of where different algorithms will land on the floor robot mats before testing how accurate our predictions were. Finally, we create our own 4 step algorithm and again predicted where it would land before testing how accurate we were.

Year 6 - Variables in Games lesson 1

Date: 26th Apr 2023 @ 3:35pm

Today we began our Computing unit of variables in games. This involved using Scratch to explore how to add variables to different sprites. We experimented with adding the variable of score and practised changing the scores of different sprites when they were clicked.

Year 3 Desktop Publishing Invitations

Date: 26th Apr 2023 @ 11:52am

This week in Computing we used our Desktop publishing skills on Google Slides to create Royal Coronation Invitations. We were given specific information then we had to include but we needed to edit the content when we realised there had been a (deliberate) mistake! We changed the font style and colour, page orientation, included pictures and tried to make it look appealing to our intended guests. Here are a few examples of our work so far...

Year 6 - Computing

Date: 20th Apr 2023 @ 10:33am

Today we completed our final lesson on Tinkercad. We used everything we have previously learned to design and make our own 3D structure. We think our final products are brilliant and use lots of appealing features.

Year 3 Computing Creating Media

Date: 19th Apr 2023 @ 11:53am

Today we started our computing unit and discussed how images and text can work together to communicate meaning and messages. We looked at many different symbols and sorted the advantages and disadvantages of using text, images or both. We then went online on the Chromebooks. Having logged in successfully, we created a new Google Doc and changed the page orientation. Finally we started to add text and images to send a Happy Birthday or Happy New Year poster.

Coding Club - Chase Game

Date: 4th Apr 2023 @ 8:30pm

This week in Coding Club, we used scratch.mit.edu to create a chase game. Pupils had to use the coding blocks to program a sprite to move when the arrow keys were pressed, and a second sprite to move around the screen randomly. Pupils developed the code so that when the sprites touched, a sound played and 1 was added to the player's score. The final challenge was to display a 'level-up' message and change the background when a given score was reached. All the pupils did very well when programming this game and were successful - some even developed the game further with their own ideas.

Year 6 - Tinkercad

Date: 22nd Mar 2023 @ 2:28pm

Today in computing we have used all that we have learned so far to create name plaques and pencil pots. To do this we had to learn how to resize objects as well as creating holes in objects to allow items to be placed inside. We are really enjoying this unit of work and are looking forward to creating more in the next couple of weeks.

Year 5 - Delightful Databases

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 3:37pm

In this lesson, pupils in year 5 begun their journey learning about databases. We made our own paper-databases about animals and searched through them to answer questions. We found out that each entry in a database is called a record, and the different information that is recorded is called a field. Pupils then explored an online database and answered questions about the information they found. We learned how to navigate the database using the 'form' view to sort the records by different fields.

Year 6 - Tinkercad

Date: 9th Mar 2023 @ 3:00pm

In today's lesson we had our second lesson on Tinkercad. This involved placing shapes onto a plane and change the heights and widths of each shape. We then experimented with adding shapes on top of others and group them to create one shape. We are becoming much more proficient at using Tinkercad.

Reception Online Safety

Date: 2nd Mar 2023 @ 3:45pm

Reception have been reading a story about Smartie the Penguin.  Smartie is a little penguin who is very excited that he got a new tablet for his birthday.  However, throughout the story Smartie faces several problems relating to keeping himself safe.  The children had to help Smartie make the right descisions to make sure he was safe and happy playing on his new device.

"If someone is mean to you online you can block them" Logan

"Always tell you mummy if your don't know what to do" Kit

"Keep you private information safe"  Alfie

The children then discussed some different scernios and talked about how and why it is important to keep safe!

Year 6 - 3D Design

Date: 2nd Mar 2023 @ 3:32pm

Today we began our new Computing unit, which is based on 3D design. We started the lesson by discussing how 3D design is used in the real world, including in the construction and engineering industries. We used a site called Tinkercad and learned the basic functions needed to manipulate 3D shapes. We learned how to place, rotate, resize, duplicate and align shapes. All the children completed each tutorial successfully and we had a great afternoon.
