Year 6 Computing - Variables in Games

Today we began our coding unit of variable in games. We used Scratch to code different sprites to either increase or decrease in value when clicked. Some of us went further and added backdrops and sound.

Year 6 visit to Manchester Museum

Today Year 6 visited Manchester Museum. There were lots of different areas to explore, including Ancient Egypt, Fossils, The Natural World and Ancient Asia. We were able to link our learning in Science to the fossil and dinosaur section as well as looking at how animals and plants have evolved over time. We had a great time and learned lots.

Year 1 Beebots

Today we began our 'moving a robot' work to learn early programming skills. We explored using the individual buttons and commands, identifying what each command for the Beebot does and using them to start to predict the outcome of the robot program. 

Reception Clay Bog Baby Models and Habitats

Reception have been reading the story 'Bog Baby'.  As part of our art work all the children made their own clay model of the Bog Baby.  the children looked carefully at the different features of the Bog Baby including his big googley eyes, long spikey tail and little mouse like ears.  The children explored the clay using their hands to manipulate the shape and size.  They used the teachniques of slip, score and blend to successfully attach the different parts to their model.  When the models had dried the child painted them carefully.  Every child made their own home for the Bog Baby which they used a range of different materials from the create area.

Year Three- Dan Worsley workshop!

Today the children in Year Three were visited by Dan Worsley, a fantastic local author! The children loved hearing Dan’s fantastic stories about an alien and an evil pirate! We then had a workshop in which we discussed how to describe characters and how to add detail about appearance and feelings. We then planned a piece about an evil pirate which we wrote in the afternoon!

Year Three- Amazing artists!

In Art, Year Three have started a new pathway of telling stories through Art. We have started looking at inspirational artists Quentin Blake and Inbal Leitner and created double page spread that included key facts, images and our own sketches! On our journey we are going to use these artists to inspire our artwork, we are going to use modelling clay to create our own creatures! 

Year 3- Perfecting our balancing skills!

In PE, we have started our gymnastics unit. We have started by looking at balancing. We used various body points to balance on. We looked at how we could use 2, 3, 4 and 5 points to create creative balances.

We then worked in pairs to have a balancing competition. Firstly, we created a balance and then our partners had to place cones over us. Using control and concentration, we had to remain as still as possible to keep our cones balanced!

Year 1 Phonics Screening

Over the past few weeks, Year 1 have been practising especially hard for our phonics screening. We have completed lots of different activities in our provision to recap all our diagraphs and trigraphs and to continue to practise reading real words and alien words. 

Nursery Release the Butterflies!

We were all so excited this week when the caterpillars we loved and cared for turned in to butterflies! We watched them as the enjoyed the orange and sugar water we had given them and when they were strong enough we let them go so they could go in search of some beautiful flowers!

Year 6 - Le Weekend

Our French topic this half term has been 'Le Weekend' (The Weekend). We learned how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes in French before learning ten phrases for the activities we may do. After learning opinion phrases, we then constructed longer sentences and paragraphs to describe the weekend. We used French dictionaries to check unfamiliar words. 

Year 2- Exploring Improvisation

This half term in Musicwe have been exploring improvisation. Throughout the unit, we have listened to and appraised different styles of music as well as learning to sing songs, improvise using body percussion instruments and perform different pieces in small groups and as a whole class.

Year 2- Position and Direction

This week, Year Two have began their position and direction Maths unit. Yesterday, we described movement in straight lines by working with a partner to follow a set of instructions to move a counter around a grid in the correct direction. We had to understand positional language including: forwards, backwards, left and right which linked to our Programming unit of Beebots. Our knowledge from the Computing unit helped us to use the vocabulary correctly and apply it in a different area of the curriculum. 

Year 1 Painting Homes

Today we finally finished our homes! We put all the finishing touches onto our final products using paints and other materials. We have worked very hard throughout this half term to look at existing homes, design our own home, make our prototype, make our final design and evaluate what we have made. 

Year 4- Data Logging

This half term in computing, Year 4 have veen learning about what data is and why it is important to log it. This week, we looked at two graphs which measured temperature and light. We discussed what questions we could ask about this data and what each graph is telling us. Then, we interpreted these graphs and inputted the data that they showed on Chromebooks. 

Year 1 Finding Half of a Quantity

Today we learnt to find half of a quantity. We worked through lots of examples together, seeing that to find a half we need two equal groups. We then explored practically sharing a given quantity of objects into two groups using skills developed throughout our previous lessons. We checked the amounts in each groups after sharing to ensure that there was an equal amount in each group.

Year 4 - What is the link between distance and volume?

Today, we looked at the link between distance and volume. We discovered that the further away a sound is the more the soundwaves dissipate and therefore the volume is lower.

Year 6 - Barclays Life Skills Workshop

We were lucky to receive a visit from Elini, who delivered a Barclays life skill work shop on the subject of safe and sensible spending.  The session focussed on how to keep money safe and introduced specific terminology such as fraud and scam. We then went on to look in detail at an email and identifed things to look out for if it was fraud or a scam. Finally we moved on to look at sensible spending including budgeting and saving.  

 

 

Acorns - Sam plants a sunflower

This week Acorns have been reading Sam plants a Sunflower, as our class story.

We have enjoyed learning about how plants grow and what they need, including soil, water and sunlight.

We have been developing our focus and attention, taking part in small adult led group activities based around our story.

Acorns have enjoyed the immersive sensory story, especially being sprayed with the water spray when Sam plants his seeds and waters them.

Acorns have experienced planting their very own sunflowers and can't wait to see them grow. 

Acorns Butterflies

Acorns have been watching and waiting patiently for our caterpillars to change into butterflies. On Wednesday, we were excited to see our first butterfly leave its chrysalis.

We waited patiently for all 5 butterflies to appear and then enjoyed watching them fluttering around and drinking from some oranges and flowers.

Today, we released them back into the wild so the life cycle can begin again.

We have really enjoy watching our caterpillars grow and change.

Reception Releasing the Butterflies

After observing our caterpilars grow and change, the recpetion children finally released them into the wild.  Some of the children were even lucky enough to hold them before they flew off.  What a wonderful experience for the children!

Year 1 Making Homes

Today we followed our designs and prototypes to make our homes. We thought about key ideas we needed to talk about before we started to make our homes, e.g. how can we stay safe when making our homes? And how can we make sure our homes turn out the way we want them too? We then worked to follow our own designs and prototypes to each create our home. After we had created our final product we checked really carefully that there was nothing else to do to improve our finished product.

Nursery and the Repeating Pattern

This week we have read the story "Bumble Bear" about a bear who loves honey so much he joined a bee school! We have looked closely at the yellow and black striped pattern of the bee and have been recreating it in different ways,

Nursery Wash the Windows

Our outdoor space is brilliant for the children to develop their gross motor skills. One activty that they love is using rollers and paint brushes to wash the windows and anything else they can find! The large action of moving the brush and roller across a large space is great for developing arm, shoulder and wrist muscles.
