This week, our Year 3 children have been learning about Ruby Bridges as part of Black History Month. They were inspired by Ruby’s bravery as the first African American child to attend an all-white school in New Orleans in 1960. Through stories, videos, and discussions, the children explored themes of courage, fairness, and standing up for what is right. To deepen their understanding, they wrote diary entries from Ruby’s point of view, imagining her thoughts and feelings during that historic time. Their writing showed great empathy and reflection, reminding us all that one brave person can help change the world.

In this lesson, pupils were challenged to make a fantasy book cover using their digital lieracy skills. Using a range of software, pupils had to combine and edit digital images to create a photorealistic image. As well as developing the pupils' digital literacy skills, this has also raised awareness of 'fake' or edited images online.

In our science lesson on Animals Including Humans, we explored the question: Do bigger muscles mean you can jump further? We made predictions, then tested four children of different heights and muscle sizes. We measured each child’s femur length, thigh muscle size, and how far they could jump. It was exciting to collect real data and compare results. We discovered that while bigger muscles can help, other factors like leg length and technique also affect how far you can jump. It was a fun and active way to learn about muscles, bones, and how our bodies work!

This half term, we have been learning about Christianity and God. We explored the 7 sacraments and discovered how these can be different in various Christian denominations. We also talked about the importance of words, symbols, and actions in Christian rituals and ceremonies.
To finish the unit, we thought about how we have changed over our lives and how we will continue to grow and develop, both emotionally and physically. We linked this to how people grow in their faith and how they can be guided through life by their beliefs.
Date: 15th Oct 2025 @ 3:02pm
This week we have been using the language of more and fewer to compare amounts. We have used a range of representations and numbers to compare within 10. Later this week, we will be introduced to the symbols < > and = and begin to use these to compare.

This terms movements have been "up, down, side, side, cross over". This is always done on a large scale and will eventually help the children to hold a pencil correctly and form letters.

This week, Year 3 had an exciting time in their Computing lesson as they explored programming using Scratch. The children learned how to change the costumes of a sprite, making their characters move and transform in fun ways. They also experimented with switching backgrounds to create different scenes for their animations. Everyone especially enjoyed painting their own sprites and designing colourful backdrops. It was wonderful to see their creativity shine as they brought their ideas to life. A fantastic addition to what we've already learnt in coding—well done, Year 3! We can’t wait to see what they create next.
Year 3 - When Year 3 met Jen Carney an author and illustrator
Date: 9th Oct 2025 @ 9:17am
Year 3 had an exciting and inspiring visit from author and illustrator Jen Carney, thanks to the National Literacy Trust. Jen is the brilliant mind behind The Day My School Got Famous and The Accidental Diary of B.U.G., and we were lucky enough to hear her read extracts from both books. Her stories were full of humour, creativity, and relatable characters — we were hooked!
As part of her visit, Jen also led us in a fun and imaginative drawing activity. We each chose a letter of the alphabet and had to think of the most obscure thing that began with it. Then we got creative and drew our own unique pictures based on that word. It was amazing to see how original and quirky our drawings turned out — just like Jen’s own illustrations!
We’re also very grateful to the National Literacy Trust, who gifted our year group 40 copies of Jen’s books! We’ve been enjoying them during our daily ‘Buzzing about Books’ time and can’t wait to read more.
A huge thank you to Jen Carney for inspiring us with her words, her artwork, and her enthusiasm for books!
