Year 3 - Shadow Dance

Date: 3rd Apr 2025 @ 9:16am

In our dance lesson today, we explored how light plays a huge role in creating reflections and shadows. Have you ever noticed how shadows change shape when we move? It’s almost like they’re dancing with us! We started by pretending to be a warm, beams of light, as we travelled in straight lines around the hall. Then, we switched gears and partnered up do be eachothers' shadow where we had to copy the movements. Remember, light can transform everything around us, and dancing helps us understand these amazing science concepts. Let's keep experimenting with our movements!

Nursery and the Elephant Trunks

Date: 1st Apr 2025 @ 5:04pm

We have throughly enjoyed reading zoo stories over the past two weeks inlcuding "Poo in the Zoo" and "Dear Zoo". After exploring elephant poo, we decided to make our own elephants. Mrs Welch found a super idea using a party blower as the elephants trunk. The children spent time carefully collaging their elephants before being given the ultimate elephant trunk! The children had a wonderful time blowing the party blowers and pretending to be elephants. It was quiet tricky to get a sound out of the party blower and the children had to practise before managing to create a super loud sound! By the end of the day, Mrs Welch wasn't sure it was such a wonderful idea and went home with a headache!

Reception applying our phonics knowledge

Date: 31st Mar 2025 @ 9:41pm

Over the past few weeks the children have been busy applying their phonics knowledge to a range of different indpendent activities in the classroom.  We have been practicing reading and writing our tricky words on sight to help our reading become more fluent.  We have also been identifying diagraphs in words and segmenting and blanding them to read the and reading simple sentences including phase 3 diagraphs.

Reception Learn about the Lifecycle of a Frog.

Date: 31st Mar 2025 @ 9:22pm

During our spring walk the children noticed some frogspawn in our school pond.  We took a small amount of frogspawn back to the classroom to observe what was happening.  The children enjoyed using the magnifying glasses to look closely at the frogspawn and used a range of new vocabulary to desrcibe what they could see. During our oracy session we introduced some new vocabularly and practiced projecting our voices when saying the words.  We looked at some different images and watch some short video clips and discusses as a class what we could see and what we thought was happening in the pictures.  The children practised using the a range of different sentence starters  and expanding their sentences using because.  The children used our signals for agree, build and challenge to beging to have a discussion with their peers.

"I think the frog is laying its eggs" Lily-Mae

"I agree with Lilly-Mae.  IT's calle frogspawn" Lilah

"Next the tadpoles nibble a hole and swim in the pond" Freyja

"They get front and back legs" Rosie

"It's called a froglet because it has a long tail" Dennis.

The children then worked indentedently to correctly order the pictures in the lifecycle and label the pictures with the correct vocabulary.  Some of the children even chose to paint a picture of the frog in the pond.  Come and have a look at our learning.

Year 1 Police Horses

Date: 31st Mar 2025 @ 6:14pm

Today Year 1 enjoyed meeting two police horses! We began by watching the police officers get the horses ready by putting their bridles and saddles on. We then had lots of oppourtunity to ask questions to gain a better understanding of why police horses are important, when they are used and how they are looked after. We were also able to give them some commands which they followed to enable them to move forwards, backwards, left and right.

School Council- Opal Ideas For The Playground.

Spelling Bee March 2025

Date: 28th Mar 2025 @ 10:30am

Today we held our second Spelling Bee of the school year. 4 children were chosen from each group to represent their house and were given 3 spellings each. They have been learning these words over the last few weeks and we could all tell. The children did brilliantly and did themselves (and their house) proud. We are already looking forward to the final Spelling Bee in the Summer term.

Nursery Explore Elephant Poo

Date: 27th Mar 2025 @ 3:06pm

This week we have been reading the story "Poo in the Zoo". The chidlren came to school to discover a big lump of elephant poo in the tuff tray! "Ewww! What's that?" they said. We discussed what it looked like and how it might of got there. We remembered that Miss Walsh had been to the zoo on Tuesday and maybe she had trodden in it or an elephant did a poo in her bag! The children explored the poo (wearing safety googles of course) and pulled bits out using tweezers. They found bits of food and a few stones! It was a great discussion point and encouraged lots of conversation.

(Disclaimer - it wasn't real elephant poo!)

Nursery Make a Shepherd's Pie

Date: 27th Mar 2025 @ 2:57pm

This week Mrs Welch was treated to a delicious Shepherd's Pie made in the mud kitchen. One child led the play and started off cutting the carrots to go in the pie. He then added mud and sand and another child said "I will go and get you some water". They came back with a jug of water which they added to the pie. This was then mixed together. The children showed the pie to Mrs Welch but she was firmly told "Don't eat it yet! It's hot!". When it had cooled down, the pie was given to Mrs Welch to enjoy. She ate every last bit and said it was the best Shepherd's Pie she had ever tasted.

Year 4 - Science - Pitch

Date: 27th Mar 2025 @ 9:17am

This week in science, we looked at pitch. We learned that it is how high or low a sound is. Pitch is determined by the frequency of the sound waves. Higher frequency sound waves produce a higher pitch, while lower frequency waves produce a lower pitch.

We compared two straws—one short and one long. We noticed a difference in pitch when we blew through them.

The short straw produces a higher-pitched sound because the air vibrates faster inside it, creating sound waves with a higher frequency.

The long straw produces a lower-pitched sound because the air vibrates more slowly, creating sound waves with a lower frequency.

We also looked at what happens when a bolt is placed into a balloon. The children predicted what would happen and why. When a bolt is placed inside a balloon and the balloon is shaken or spun quickly, the bolt moves around and creates a vibrating sound. When the bolt moves faster, the vibrations happen more frequently, producing a higher pitch.

Year 4 - Egyptian dance sequence

Date: 27th Mar 2025 @ 8:50am

This week, we used all our learning so far to start to put together a dance sequence. We thought about gods/goddesses, hieroglyphics, making the pyramids and what all those things mean. We created a mind map of ideas on the board, then started putting our sequences together.

Reception Music during Spring Term

Date: 26th Mar 2025 @ 11:39pm

We began this term by learning lots of winter songs. Snowflakes, Snowflakes and I’m a Little Snowman were some of our favourites. We learnt songs and explored music linked with Chinese New Year. Recently we have focused on learning animal songs. We all love Tiger, Tiger Orange and Black and Walking Though the Jungle. We continue to learn lots of Nursery Rhyme and songs to help with speaking, phonics as well as our musical understanding.

We can now name many percussion instruments and have experimented playing maracas, claves, drums, glockenspiels and tambourines. We can stop and start together and can nearly keep a steady beat as a class!

Year 3 - Shadows

Date: 26th Mar 2025 @ 5:05pm

In our exciting science topic about light, we’ve been discovering all about shadows! Can you believe that different objects can cast different shadows? We’ve talked about opaque objects, like a solid book, which block light completely. Then, there are transparent things, like windows, that let light pass right through without any shadow at all! And don’t forget translucent objects, like rulers, which create softer shadows. It’s amazing how our world works! So, next time you see a shadow, think about what kind of object is making it. We looked at our shadows outside and discussed that shadows will be longer during the morning and evening as the light source (the sun) is closer to the object.

Year 6 - Careers in Aviation

Date: 26th Mar 2025 @ 4:49pm

Today Year 6 took part in an online event hosted by Primary Futures. We learnt all about jobs in aviation including an aeronautical engineer, a police aircraft pilot and a researcher from Manchester University.

Reception Spring Walk

Date: 26th Mar 2025 @ 4:08pm

This week the children have enjoyed exploring the season of spring.  As part of our learning we went on a sping walk around the school grounds to spot the different signs of spring.  The children working in pair to tick off what they saw.  We spotted pink blossom growing on the trees, daffodils growing by the pond, buds on the trees and frogspawn in the pond.   We were even lucky enough to see a see life frog.

"The blossom grows on the trees" Dennis

"I can see a bird in the nest" Kevin

"The frog lays frogspawn in the pond" Freyja

Year 3 – Primary Futures – Sky Explorers Exciting Jobs in Aviation!

Date: 26th Mar 2025 @ 10:12am

What an exciting day we had at school! We learnt all about amazing jobs in aviation. First, we met an aeronautical engineer who shared fascinating details about how planes are built. I never knew that they had to think about aerodynamics! Then, we met a police aircraft pilot who wowed us with pictures of the views from the aircraft (most impressingly, Buckingham Palace) and how each day is extremely different. He even mentioned that he'll be watching The Grand National next week as he'll be in an aircraft above. Everyone was on the edge of their seats! Finally, we listened to a lovely woman who is a research fellow. She told us how she investigates new technology to make flying safer. What a brilliant morning it was, and it made us think about what we want to be when we grow up!
