Year 4 - Ribble Rivers Trust

Date: 8th Jan 2026 @ 11:57am

Over the last week, Year 4 had the opportunity to work with Ribble Rivers Trust. Some of their team members came into school to talk to us about all the work they do. We all started our own conservation team to help RRT. We were given a model of a river and in our conservation teams, we had to label each part of the river Ribble. We had to use our oracy skills to discuss where we thought each part went. We found the tributaries, saw meanders in the river and found the source and mouth.

Helen (RRT) told us how the floodplains rich with wildlife because the river’s water creating the floodplains bring lots of nutrition for the wildlife. We looked at lots of different wildlife and decided which were freshwater and which were saltwater. We were surprised to learn that trouts all start in a river as a Brown Trout, but some migrate to the sea and become sea trouts.

Helen and Cody from RRT also told us about their jobs as engagement officers and how they work with school to help spread the word.

RRT are planting 35,000 trees this year to help provide shade for the river wildlife during hot months and they have also helped farmers pay for fences to stop their animals going near the rivers and causing pollution. Pollution such as sewage waste and litter can harm rivers and their wildlife.

In the afternoons, we were lucky enough to go out on a walk to Stanley Park. We saw lots of nature and Helen taught us about wildlife we saw there.

In a tree filled area of Stanley Park, we paused for two minutes to listen to the sounds we could hear. We heard birds tweeting, people talking walking passed and even the sealions at the zoo!

Afterwards, we picked leaves to do leaf printing back in school.

Along our walk there and back we couldn’t believe the amount of litter we saw. We spoke about how this affects wildlife and our environment.

Year 5 - Analysing WAGOLLs

Date: 8th Jan 2026 @ 10:38am

The Tapestry group had a really positive session exploring biased arguments, with adult support helping them to navigate the text and build confidence. Using Widgit symbols, the children read and discussed the WAGOLLs together, which supported their understanding and kept them fully engaged. As a group, they identified key features such as strong opinion words, persuasive language and one-sided viewpoints, linking these back to the visuals to explain their ideas. There was lots of thoughtful discussion about the writer’s purpose and whether the argument was fair or unfair, and with support the children were able to explain what makes an argument biased. The group worked well together, stayed focused and made clear progress in recognising and understanding the features of biased arguments.

The Year 3 and 4 provision group took an exciting step forward in developing their speaking and listening skills during this week’s Oracy lesson, where they focused on structuring their talk using the sequence words first, next, and finally. These sentence starters helped pupils organise their ideas and present them in a clear, easy‑to-follow order. Throughout the session, the children practised making simple, clear points one at a time, using straightforward language and linking each idea to the next to create a beginning, middle, and end in their speech.

Year 3 - Science Rocks

Date: 7th Jan 2026 @ 8:38pm

Year 3 enjoyed their first science lesson on rocks, where we learned how geologists classify rocks into three types: sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous. We discussed how each type of rock is formed and what makes them different.

Each table investigated a rock using magnifying glasses, carefully observing its features. The children used 4–6 rock cards to help them identify which rock they had and explain their reasoning. We explored chalk, limestone, slate, marble and granite, discussing their characteristics and deciding how each should be classified. The children showed great curiosity and scientific thinking throughout the lesson! 🪨🔍

Reading to peers builds confidence and strengthens comprehension skills, making learning both collaborative and fun. We are proud of how engaged and supportive the children were during this session.

Year 2- Mastering Number!

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:25pm

In mastering number we have been looking at how to make doubles, using the number facts we already know. We played a game with a idce, looking at doubling and halving numbers. We also looked at using the rekenrek, to find doubles. We used the sentence stems '5 and a bit' '-- is made up of 5 and --' and 'double 5 and -- is --'.

Year 2- Living or never alive?

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:21pm

This week in science, we explored and compared the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive. Through partner discussions, we shared our ideas and talked about similarities and differences we have noticed in the world around us. We worked together to sort and arrange pictures, answering our focus question: Is it living, dead, or has it never been alive? We discussed our choices with our partner which allowed us to critical think and reason why we think it is either living, dead or never been alive.

Year 2- Yoga

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:20pm

This week in PE, we took part in a yoga session linked to the exciting theme “Jumping into the Ocean.” The lesson allowed us to copy and repeat a range of yoga movements inspired by life in the ocean. We carried out poses that linked to creatures such as dolphins, starfish, and sharks, helping us to use our imagination while developing our physical skills. Through yoga, we worked on improving our flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. We practised holding poses, controlling the movements and focusing on our breathing. These activities support not only physical development but also our mind to feel calm, relaxed and focused.

In today’s lesson, Today, Year 5 recapped their physical oracy skills by experimenting with tone, pitch and pace. Pupils practised saying the same sentence in different ways, including formal, excited and nervous, to understand how voice can change meaning and impact. The children then focused on their cognitive oracy skills, learning how to structure an argument. They explored what a biased argument is and discussed how viewpoints can be shaped to persuade an audience. Working collaboratively, pupils generated points to support their argument and justified their reasoning. The summariser in each group was responsible for structuring and delivering a clear summary sentence that reflected the group’s viewpoint.

Year 1 Islam

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 7:16am

Today we began to discuss our key question in RE, ‘How might beliefs about creation affect the way people treat the world?’ We began by learning the name of the religion we will be learning about and that Muslims believe there is only one God – Allah. Today’s lesson involved learning about how we should treat the environment, why it is important and whose responsibility it is. We did this through looking at images and real life nature examples. We went on a nature walk to collect lots of natural resources and we then used these natural resources to create transient nature pictures. After this, we looked at a number of images and decided which are examples of looking after the environment and which are not. We sorted them together, verbally discussing and justifying each example.
